Library searching

Library Searching

L.I. - Find books using the library search engine
Understand how the dewey decimal system works

On the computer open the search engine.
Look at the following research questions and type the appropriate keywords to find the book.

The name of the first working railway engine - Riding the rails 385
What was taught in Roman Schools - Ancient Romans 937
The island south of Italy - Travelling solo to Itay 945
The inventor of the petrol engine - Great inventions 609
The name of the first prime minister of New Zealand - Helen Clark  993.03

What is the subject of the book if the dewey number is:

If you have 3 books that all have the dewey number 254, how will they be ordered? - Alphabetical order by the authors last name.

How to use the contents page to research effectively

The table of contents lists the chapters and other main parts of the book.  It is helpful because it gives you a general idea about the book so you know which chapters apply to your research.  Below is an example from a book about the moon.

Table of Contents

Introduction                                                                                                                                                       1
Chapter 1      The size of the moon in relation to the earth                                                            5

Chapter 3      Full, half, and quarter moons                                                                                          31

My Inside this Poem

The Unwritten

Inside this diary
hides the memories
that have never been read
never been understood

they’re hiding

they’re tired awake and waiting
day after day
staying there
desperately waiting to appear
in days to come it will be
read and shared

Even as the days pass
they fade away
but we will still feel them when they come
not today not tomorrow
but it will come one day

Will they come back to show other
children who I was
Would they remember me
Would they understand
to share it with other family members

Maybe there is only one memory
one secret
one story
one wish
and it is more than we need
it’s all in this diary

every diary in the world it like this.
