I remember as if it was yesterday. It was around 4am and my mum and 3 aunties were packing our food, utensils, clothes, lotion, brushes, tents, blankets and pillows for our camping trip. I was really tired but also really excited. We had started early because we had a long road trip ahead of us.

Netball

Netball is a great game to play with a big group of people. On the netball court there must be 7 players on each team. There should be two different teams competing against each other. Netball is easier when you know what position you’re in.

Each player stands in different positions for different reasons. In the game there is a goal attacker . They can shoot the ball to score their team a goal . They can run in the third they started in, the center third and their teams circle. Goal defence can also do the same because goal attack and goal defence mark each other. Wing attack and wing defence can do the same as goal attack and goal defence except they can’t go into their teams shooting circle. Goal shoot and goal defence can go anywhere in their shooting third but no further. The last player in the game is center. Center can go in all three thirds but not in the shooting circles. Once you know what position you’re in it makes learning the rules a little bit more easier.

Netball rules don’t only revolve around what position you stand, but a few rules do. When any of the players step into a third or shooting circle they aren’t allowed in the referee will blow the whistle. If that happens then it is the other teams ball where the rule was broken. The other rule is, if the ball goes out it is the other teams throw in. If two players from the same team have their hands on the ball at the same time, it is a short pass and the other teams ball. If someone smacks the ball out of the other teams hand it is called contact and it is the other teams ball. If the person with the ball bounces it on the ground, or plays with it in their hands then it is a handover and it’s the other teams ball. Another rule is if the shooter shoots the ball and it goes straight up in the air and doesn’t touch anything and they catch it again it called a short pass because it’s almost like throwing it to yourself. When you know how to pass the ball it’ll improve the goal shoot or goal attacks shooting.

Netball players have different ways to throw the ball to keep it away from the other team. One of these ways depends on how you pass the ball.  There are 3 different ways to pass the ball. The pass that most of the netball players use is chest pass. Chest pass is when the person with the ball has it near their chest and passes it to another play from their teams to their chest. Another way to pass the ball in netball is to bounce pass. To bounce pass you need to bounce the ball on the ground and face it in the direction of the person you’re trying to pass it to. The last pass is, over head pass. This pass takes the ball from the top of your head and passing it to the other opponent's chest.

Netball is a fun game to play with a big group of your friends or family. There must be two teams of seven players. Netball positions, rules and ball passing strategies are all really easy after using it for a long period of time.
