Using an index
L.I. - Library/Research skills
Using an index to find information quickly


Most non-fiction books have an index.  Like a table of contents, it lists the books contents and relevant page numbers, but in much more detail.  It presents the topics in alphabetical order to help your search.  Below is an example from a health book.

Before you start highlight 4 words you don’t know and look them up in the dictionary.
Fatigue - weariness from bodily or mental exertion.
Hygiene - Also, hygienics the science that deals with the preservation of health.
Incapacitated -  Unable to act or respond.
Inoculation - The act or process of inoculating


Why are there two index entries for drugs? Pages 70 - 75 talks about some drugs may be harmful and pages 60 - 65 talks about medical drugs.  
Which two entries will help you find out about tiredness and how to cope?
Pages 80 - 90 could help you find out about tiredness and how to cope.


Which pages would you turn to in order to find out about injuries?
Pages 60 - 65 will help you find out about injuries!


Which two entries would you use to find out more about healthy eating?
Pages 80 - 90 tell you about good health.


Which pages would you turn to in order to find out about the bad effects of smoking? Pages 121 - 124 will tell you about the bad effects of smoking.
On which pages would you find out about hospital life?  Pages 40-44, 48-65 will help you find out about hospital life.


Why do you think there are two ranges of page numbers for lungs?  
There are two ranges of numbers for lungs because 1 range of numbers mayby for the good things about lungs and what they do and the second range of numbers could be of the bad things you can do to your lungs and how big your lungs are where they go. The basic stuff.


On which pages would you find out more about the healthy effects of sport?

Pages 12 -14 will show you healthy effect of sports.
