Using an index to find information quickly

Most non-fiction books have an index.  Like a table of contents, it lists the books contents and relevant page numbers, but in much more detail.  It presents the topics in alphabetical order to help your search.  Below is an example from a health book.

There are two index entries for drugs because there are two different kinds of drugs. Drugs that are harmful and drugs that are medical.

You turn to the pages 121 - 124 to find out about smoking.
On which pages would you find out about hospital life?
On pages 40 - 44, 48, 65 you find out information on hospital life.
Why do you think there are two ranges of page numbers for lungs?
I think there are two ranges of pages for lungs because one set of pages might be for healthy lungs and another might be for unhealthy lungs.
On which pages would you find out more about the healthy effects of sport?
On pages 15 - 20 you will find out about sports.
